Kenneth Tuffin scored a putback with 0.3 ticks remaining to will Phoenix past red-hot Rain or Shine, 93-91, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Saturday night. ADVERTISEMENT

The Filipino-Kiwi forward cleaned up a Jason Perkins miss to help the petrol club escape the Elastopainters by the skin of their teeth and to a second straight victory to start the new year.

The measures are the latest in a raft of pledges out of Beijing since last week aimed at kickstarting the world’s number-two economy.

Since then, the 39-year-old says the prices he gets from purchasers have fallen by half and he’s had to scale back to four workers and about one-third of the ponds, some months not even breaking even. His wife has had to take a job at a watermelon farm to help support their two children.

MANILA, Philippines—Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle had a reunion of sorts in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Friday.

A lot has changed, though, since both dynamic guards shared the floor for one team. ADVERTISEMENT

Romeo and Pringle’s reunion saw them don the Green and White once more. However, it’s not for the now-defunct Globalport but rather for the Terrafirma Dyip.

Magnolia Hotshots rebound from Christmas heartbreak

Magnolia didn’t have to look too far for the very best reason to win on Friday night. It has been bugging them throughout the holidays.

After losing five of their first seven games and with their playoff hopes starting to dim, the Hotshots pulled out all the stops at Ninoy Aquino Stadium to turn back Terrafirma, 89-84, and stay somewhat afloat in advancing past the elimination phase of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

“Everyone could see how our [past] games have turned out. We’ve lost a lot of tough ones,” said Zav Lucero, whose 17 points and clutch free throws near the end helped tow the struggling powerhouse to a much-needed win to improve to 3-5. “We’ve got to win games—no more better fuel than that.
