MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. extended his sympathy to the bereaved family of former senator Santanina  Rasul—the first and only Muslim woman elected to the Senate.

Rasul passed away last November 28 at the age of 94.

“As the first and only Muslim woman senator to serve the Philippines, Senator Rasul broke barriers through her legislative endeavors and became a trailblazer for equality and empowerment. Her contributions were not just historic—they were transformative,” Marcos said in a letter dated December 2 that was released to the media on Tuesday.

Rasul championed the rights of the marginalized communities, opened doors for women in the military, and inspired Filipinos to believe in their potential, Marcos said.

He added that Rasul’s legacy goes beyond her legislative accomplishments, as she was a woman of “wisdom, grace, and unshakable integrity.”

“Her impact was felt not only within the halls of government but in the lives of the people she so selflessly served,” Marcos added.

Marcos said he hoped Rasul’s loved ones could find comfort in knowing that her life and legacy will forever be etched in the country’s history and the hearts of those she touched.

“She leaves behind a powerful reminder of the change one person can bring through courage, compassion, and conviction,” Marcos said.

“Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time,” he added.
